| Regarding the Plurality of Gods: a biblical idea denied by most of the Christian world By RE CASTEL Most of the Christian churches claim that there is one and only one God in the whole existence. But the Christian scriptures tell us that "there be gods many, and lords many" [1 Corinthians 8: 5]. The Lord Jesus Christ himself referenced the scripture that states "Ye are gods; and all of you are the children of the Most High" [St. John 10: 34-36; Psalms 82: 1, 6-7]. Since Jesus talked about and affirmed the idea of "gods", then it must be that the idea of the plurality of gods is a Christian doctrine. The scriptures tell us – "For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords" [Deuteronomy 10: 17; see also Psalms 136: 2-3; Joshua 22: 22]. If God is a God of gods, then it must be that there are many gods – otherwise the prophets and the scriptures lie. The scriptures' reference to gods cannot be a reference to idols because clearly it would be foolish to say that God is a God of idols. The prophets and the scriptures declare gods in the true sense of the word, therefore it must be that there are many gods. God talking to those with Him said – "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness" [Genesis 1: 26], and "Behold, the man is become as one of us" [Genesis 3: 22]. There is no indication here that God is talking to others who are not like Him. These are but a few of the many scriptures with references to "gods" in the plural. Most of the Christian churches deny the idea of "gods" in spite of the clear doctrine presented by the scriptures. This indicates that these Christian churches ignore the scriptures, which indicates that they ignore the word of God and therefore these Christian churches are not of God. Now, although the scriptures say that there are many gods, the scriptures also affirm monotheism and say that "to us there is but one God, the Father" and also "one Lord Jesus Christ" [1 Corinthians 8: 6]. Basically, the Father is the one God who is uniquely our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ is the one Lord who is our Saviour, and who is the Firstborn Son and therefore our eldest brother, since we, together with our Lord Jesus, are all the children of God our Father. Monotheism and the idea of plural gods can properly be reconciled. Since the scriptures affirm the idea of the plurality of gods, monotheism must mean that all the gods abide and rule by the same all-encompassing law. Thus, the Father and the Son are as one god and all the gods in all existence are as one god, because they all abide and rule by the same all-encompassing law. And thus, indeed, the same justice, the same power, rules over all existence. Finally, monotheism means that, notwithstanding there are many gods in the totality of the existence, to us, God our Father is uniquely our God, and the Lord Jesus is uniquely our Lord. God is our Father, and the Lord Jesus is our Saviour. The doctrine of the plurality of gods is relevant here because it upholds the idea of gods begetting gods that reconciles with the idea of continuous creation of worlds (i.e., the idea of universes spawning universes, which is affirmed by the continuous cosmic mass formation process that is advocated in the new theory of kinematic relativity). |
